Home / Smoke alarms

Smoke alarm installation, 2027-compliant.

From 1 January 2027 every Queensland home must have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms. We supply and install RED Professional alarms for $120 + GST each, with a certificate of compliance for every job.

What the 2027 smoke alarm laws require

Queensland's smoke alarm laws have been phased in since 2017. Rentals and homes being sold have had to comply since 1 January 2022. From 1 January 2027 the same rules apply to every home in Queensland, including owner-occupied houses and units.

To comply, your smoke alarms must be:

  • Photoelectric (to Australian Standard AS 3786-2014), not ionisation
  • Interconnected, so when one goes off, they all go off
  • Installed in every bedroom, in hallways that connect bedrooms to the rest of the home, and on every storey
  • Hardwired to mains power, or powered by a 10-year non-removable battery
  • Less than 10 years old, and replaced if they fail to work when tested

The requirements above are a summary. The official rules are on the Queensland Fire Department website (fire.qld.gov.au). We'll check your home against them on the day.

What we install

We use the RED Professional range, a photoelectric alarm with a 10-year lithium battery that interconnects wirelessly. There's no new cabling through your walls or ceilings, so most homes are done in a few hours with very little mess.

Pricing

$120 + GST per alarm, supplied and installed. That includes testing, interconnection and a certificate of compliance you can keep for your insurer, a future sale or a tenancy. A typical three-bedroom single-storey home needs 4–5 alarms. Call or send the form and we'll tell you exactly how many your place needs.

Don't leave it to December

Every home in Queensland that isn't compliant has the same deadline, and electricians' diaries fill up fast in the last few months of the year. Book now and it's one less thing to think about.

FAQ

Common questions.

If they are ionisation alarms, more than 10 years old, or not interconnected, yes. Working alarms that do not meet the 2027 standard still need replacing.

Most homes take a few hours. Wireless interconnected alarms mean no new cabling through walls or ceilings.

Yes. Every install comes with an NF Trades certificate of compliance listing each alarm and its location.

Rental properties have had to comply since 1 January 2022. If yours has not been upgraded, it should be done now.
